Abstract

This article examines the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in reshaping scholarly communication, conceptualized through the metaphor of the "Neural Networked Scholar"-a paradigm in which researchers and AI systems co-create, evaluate, and disseminate knowledge. We explore AI’s transformative impact across workflows-writing, peer review, publishing, and discovery-while identifying critical gaps related to ethics, trust, integrity, and governance. Employing a mixed-methods review that synthesizes recent empirical studies, editorial insights, and system-level critiques, we map out how neural network–based tools are influencing scholarly norms and infrastructures. Our findings highlight both the promise of efficiency gains and personalization, and the risks of hallucinated content, compromised peer review integrity, and systemic misuse. We conclude by calling for an ecosystem-level governance framework that upholds scholarly values in the AI era.
